He began his studies of the pathophysiology of inflammatory bowel diseases some 30 years ago by studying the intestinal permeability of patients with Crohn's disease and their family members and spouses. His occasional paranoia about angering women’s groups (big feminism objecting to his investigations, or something) seems misplaced when the documentary’s real problem is its shallow approach to complexity. Hollander Design has about 40 employees and offices in New York City, Chicago and Sag Harbor, and its three studio leaders are Geoffrey Valentino, Melissa Reavis, and Stephen Eich. Notably, the book is attributed to the firm itself rather than to Edmund Hollander individually. A shady grove of catalpa trees underplanted with Carex lends a lush transition to the sprawling meadows beyond the main house. If escaping the city wasn't enough, the cascading water will instantly put you at ease.

A shallow L-shaped pool cradles the home’s dining room and is visible from the entry sequence. This allows the “vertical glass walls to meet the horizontal water ‘wall’ of the pool. At night it’s like a mirror that brings all the elements together,” he says. Dr. Hollander is a board-certified gastroenterologist specializing in diagnosis and therapy of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis. He is a professor of medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) School of Medicine. He has been taking care of patients with inflammatory bowel diseases for over 35 years.

Hollander has also shot a television pilot in East Hampton for PBS that gives a look into the landscape design process at spectacular properties and about the collaborative process of working with architects. Edmund Hollander and Maryanne Connelly met over a pencil sketch and a reference book on plants. They quickly discovered they shared a compelling, holistic approach to landscape design and created an award-winning firm that dovetails a love of design with an abiding passion for horticulture.

There’s gold along the way (a sincere conversation between Dyer and his brother about their different ways of coping with their macho east London upbringing; a boxing gym’s role in boosting mental health) but it’s all too brief. Dyer is blessed with the kind of charm that makes people open up, but it’s wasted here. Hollander glass has been providing textured glass products to MPD for over 10 years. Hollander glass carries the largest assortment of decorative pattern glass and mirror in the United States. We also offer restoration window glass, fused glass, art glass, and digitally printed glass.

Hollander said he wanted “The Landscape of Home” to reflect who they are at Hollander Design. When he interviewed writers for the book, he looked for someone who would take the time to get to know the firm. And magic is where the fun of this comes in,” said Edmund Hollander, the firm’s president and namesake, during an interview last week at The American Hotel in Sag Harbor, the village he calls home. “The Landscape of Home,” the latest book on the work of Hollander Design, captures the joy and the “magic” of the firm’s design work.

This Hamptons Landscape Uses Reflecting Pools to Mirror the Home's Architecture

Our proprietary safety backing process is ANSI Z97.1 certified all while only adding 1/32” of thickness to the glass. Specialty tooled furnace for safety tempering a wide variety of glass, including heavy textured pattern glass, Restoration Window Glass™, and colored glass, in thicknesses of 5/32” up to 3/4”. Principal Viveca Bissonnette’s background is not only in interior design, but also in cultural anthropology. She uses the techniques of anthropologists to truly understand our clients, how our clients operate, and their culture. “We have to download all of that information before we even start the design process,” he said. Hollander Design also does commercial work and public spaces, but it’s the homes that are the most personal.

A shallow reflecting pool lined with river rock mirrors and extends the home’s architecture into the surrounding landscape. She is primarily interested in the factors that promote identification with Power and those that facilitate the emergence of subjects capable of resistance to hegemony. As before, they switch on the lights and the sirens, bicker about snacks and shrug on protective clothing. It’s business as usual (robberies, disturbances, turf battles), until it isn’t (spoiler alert), with segues into assisted death, and a charismatic former army man (Seamus O’Hara) leading a loyalist criminal gang with messianic zeal. While far from stupid, Dyer has the analytical depth of a cat-litter tray, and keeps getting into anguished conceptual tangles (Men have had a “good run… with pay and shit”; “feminism is an important fucking cause… but it’s suppressing men”, and so on).

That question was relevant 10 years ago when we started Hollander Design Group, but it’s even more relevant today. It’s become evident there are elements of how we work virtually that just cannot compete with being together. Day or night, the water spills off the glass to expand the view through the house to the pollinator meadows and preserve beyond.

Edmund Hollander is President of Hollander Design, one of few landscape architecture firms elected to Architectural Digest’s AD100 Top Designers List. For more than 30 years, we have collaborated with the best and brightest architectural and interior designers of our time. Founded by Edmund Hollander and Maryanne Connelly, the firm operates out of New York City, the Hamptons, and Chicago. Our residential, urban, institutional, commercial and international teams work under the guidance of Edmund Hollander and three studio leaders, Geoffrey Valentino, Melissa Reavis, and Stephen Eich. Dr. Hollander's research has centered on intestinal absorption of nutrients and on paracellular transport and permeability of the intestine.

In addition to visual glimmer, the gentle cascading sound greets guests at the home’s entrance, “subtly drawing you in,” says Hollander’s Melissa Reavis, who led the garden’s redesign. Ed Hollander is on the Dean’s Council and the Advisory Board of the Ian L. McHarg Center for Urbanism and Ecology at the University of Pennsylvania. He is a board member of the New York Restoration Project, the nonprofit founded by Bette Midler with a mission to create beautiful, high-quality public space for all New Yorkers. Ed has lectured at the City College of the City University of New York, the Graduate School of Fine Arts at the University of Pennsylvania, the New York Botanical Garden, and other design-focused institutions. He is Past President of the New York Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (ASLA), and is an elected Fellow of the ASLA, one of the society’s highest honors.

His firm already had a decade-long relationship with this Bridgehampton, New York, property when new owners bought it and began building a modern home to complement the existing traditional guesthouse. Collaborating with architect Tom Kligerman, they saw in his contemporary lines and expansive glass walls “an opportunity to use water as a means of reflecting and extending these strong architectural elements into the landscape,” explains Hollander. Terraces with sweeping city views, remote farm cottages, hidden countryside retreats, and dune-side beach houses have all been enlivened by Edmund Hollander and Maryanne Connelly’s holistic approach to landscape. Perfectly balancing hard and soft elements, the team has delivered beautiful spaces from the Hamptons to Hong Kong. Over the past five decades, Hollander has lived and traveled in Latin America, researching and writing about the subcontinent’s power structures and peoples’ resistance movements. She lived in Argentina during the late sixties and seventies and was forced to leave on the eve of that country’s military coup that launched its Dirty War against its own citizens.

The Hamptons “has always been a special part of who we are,” Hollander said. The contemporary home’s vertical glass walls meet the horizontal water “walls” of the L-shaped reflecting pool, framed by a ribbon of clipped boxwoods. In every design, we respect the natural, architectural, and human ecologies unique to each place in the world. We believe attention to each creates enduring, beautiful places that become fulfilling expressions of "home". The show sometimes skips too lightly through potentially deeper moments that could have lent it more grit and substance. Still, it has a cracking ensemble (including David Carlyle, Ben Rufus Green and Sabrina Sandhu), a script stuffed with irreverence and mischief, and an acid-witted, stereotype-busting gem in Nina.
